DIY Valentines Advent Calendar

DIY-Valentines-advent-calendar-free-printable

I am so excited to show you this advent calendar that I made for my girls!  It was so fun to make and Lillie already loves it.  She keeps calling it her "house" and telling me that she LOVES chocolate and that I should put some in there for her to find.  Ha!  She is really going to love helping me open the doors everyday to get a treat for herself and Addie.

Let me show you how I made this cause you are going to want to make one for yourself as well.  You have just enough time to get it ready before Feb 1st.  I have included the printable that I created for you to use and hope that you like it.  You can find the link to the printable below.

Here's what you are going to need:

DIY-Valentines-advent-calendar
  • Advent calendar printable  I printed at Costco and it is a 12X12 size. (You are welcome to use this for your own personal use. Printables are for use by subscribers to Just Between Friends only. If you use this tutorial and post about it online, please give proper credit and link back. I would LOVE to see how yours turns out!)
  • Foam core (I got mine at Hobby Lobby.  You can get a really big piece for only $2 over by the framing area.)
  • Xacto knife
  • Mod Podge
  • 3 pieces of 12X12 Cardstock (any color.  It is going to be used for the boxes that hold the treats inside the doors. I used red.)
  • Washi Tape
Let's get started!  Begin by using Mod Podge to attach the printable to the foam core. I glued it to the edge so that I would have minimal cutting to do.

Once it has dried, you will need to cut out the doors.  I cut the pink part only (on the inside of the yellow lines) to make the door. You will need to cut the top and bottom of the door as well as the side of the door that has the heart on it.  Don't cut through the forth side because it is what makes it so that the doors swing open and closed.

Now that you have three sides cut, turn the board over and make sure your cuts went all the way through.  Next I took a straight edge and cut a line from the top to the bottom of each door making sure that you are still on the back side of the board.  You also need to make sure that the cut doesn't go all the way through the foam core.  The only reason you need to make the cut is to help the door open and close.  If it isn't cut, the door doesn't move.

I opened and shut the doors each several times at this point to make sure that things were moving smoothly.

The next part is really simple.  I wanted to make it so that this was a sort of a shadow box so that the boxes that held the treats inside were protected from little fingers.  I cut strips of foam core that were 2 inches wide and used those for the sides.  I used washi tape to hold it all together.  It was really effective and as an added bonus it is really cute.

When the sides were in place, I used my Silhouette to cut out little boxes to hold the treats.  I just set it so that the middle of the box was the same size as my door. (2 1/4 inches X 1 1/4 inches about.)

I initially was going to use elmers glue and washi tape to put the boxes together, but it took forever and didn't really work very well.  So I pulled out my handy dandy glue gun to finish the rest and it worked like a charm!  It is nice and sturdy and I don't have to worry about it.

I forgot to get a photo of this, but once all the boxes are in place, I cut another piece of foam board that was big enough to cover the back side of the box and seal the little boxes inside.  I used washi tape to attach it as well.

The last thing that I needed to do was find a way that I could close the doors and then be able to open them easily.  I took a small piece of washi tape, folded over one edge and taped it to the back side of each door.  It created a little handle of sorts that makes it really easy to open each door with.

It took me probably about an hour and a half to complete this from start to finish.  It was a really fun project to make and it is one that I can use over and over every year.  Let me know if you have any questions about any of this.  I am more than happy to help!  Hope you like it!

Day #14 {Wild}

I am feeling pretty good about the fact that I have completed two weeks of Valentine fun and only missed blogging two of those days.  I hope you have enjoyed seeing the Valentines I made as much I did in making them and giving them to my family.  I know they really looked forward to it every day!

Here is my last Valentine.

I wanted to go with something easy and I wanted to use up more of the suckers that I bought and used for my butterflies.  This was the perfect solution that I saw over at Sassy Sites (she has a ton of fun Valentines listed there).

Thanks for following along with me.  I have a lot to show you coming up in the next two weeks.  I have been working on projects in both my bedroom and my craft room.  I am also going to be a guest blogger over at Brassy Apple later this week with a fun accessory tutorial that I think you will like.  I will give you the link as soon as it is available on Friday.

Day #13 "O-Fish-ally"

Swedish Fish have always been my favorite candy, so of course I needed to create a valentine using them.

This one is totally cheesy, but I like it.  I created the print out on Picnik (I am NOT happy Picnik is going away) and then I printed it out and attached it to my bags of candy.

My husband is a fisherman so this one totally applies to him in addition to being incredibly delicious.

I am going to try to get my last Valentine done and posted by tonight so that you can have some time to use it tomorrow if you would like to.

Day #12 is Rockin

There's no better way to show someone you care about them then with a song.  For each of the ipods, I came up with a song that reminded me of the person I was going to give it to.

My husband and I chose "I Wanna Grow Old With You" as our wedding song.  It was definitely the first song that I thought of when choosing what to write on my husband's valentine.

The classic, "I love you a Bushel and a Peck" is a song that I sing to my daughters occasionally and was the perfect choice for this valentine.

These were really easy to make and I love that I can personalize them to the person I give them to.

Day #11 "Owl"-ways

The Valentine for today was also found via pinterest.  You can find my pin here but unfortunately there is no link attached to the pin, just a picture.

Anyway, I thought these were so cute and just had to give them a try.

I used cardstock to cut out all the pieces and then used a glue stick to attach them together.  I just drew the basic shapes onto the cardstock and once I had the right shape, I used that as a pattern to make the other one.

The treat bags are actually just little zip lock bags that I got from Pick Your Plum.  I'm totally "green" like that.

On the back I attached the saying, "I'll "Owl"-ways love you!

I think they turned out pretty stinkin cute.  If there is anyone that is interested in a printable pattern for these, I could try to figure out how to upload it onto here.  If no one is interested, I'm not going to take the time :)  Just let me know.

Day #9 A Squeeze & A Kiss

This is a fun and simple Valentine to put together.  Plus, who doesn't love a good "squeeze it"?

Just to save you some time, Walmart carries these, and Smith's doesn't.  FYI.  You can get them pretty dang cheap there.  Like $1 for a pack of 6.

I wanted to give my husband the more grown-up version of this valentine while still being able to use the same saying.  We were introduced to these squeeze drink mixers at Christmas time, and John really enjoyed them.  Basically it flavors a bottle of water with just a couple of drops of the liquid for zero calories.  And they taste good too.  You can find them in the aisle with the kool aid.

In case you didn't see it, the saying I put with this valentine is "Here's a squeeze and a kiss from me."  It is the perfect sentiment for my family.

Day #8 {Soda}

The Valentine for today is a fun one that I was excited to put together.  I thought it would be fun to buy some retro soda bottles and make a cute saying with a play on the word "soda".

I printed out the sayings, cut them out and glued them to some pieces of cardstock.  I left just enough room on the side to make way for a hole that the bakers twine could go through.

The bakers twine with the soda bottles is my favorite part of this whole thing.  I love the red and white look.

Butterflies and POV Features

Today is another cute-sie little treat.  My daughter is going to love these butterflies.

They are so simple to make.  All you need is some resees heart chocolates, tootsie pops, cardstock paper, googley, eyes and some hot glue.

To make the wings, I traced two hearts onto the cardstock with their bottoms overlapping.  It created the perfect place in between the hearts to glue my sucker stick to.  Then I glued the chocolates onto the wings, glued the eyes on, and tied the pipe cleaner onto the stick the create antennae.

They are super easy and really inexpensive to make!

Also, thanks to everyone that participated in the Point of View linky party this month.  There are a lot of really cute projects over there.  If you haven't looked already, go check it out.

I decided to feature very sweet and simple heart garland from Beauty & the Beard.  I love the blue mason jar as a vase too.  It just looks cozy and fun to me.

Next moth's theme is "Green" and as always you can interpret that however you would like.  We will post our projects on the fourth Friday of March, so you've got some time to get those projects done.

Day #5 {Tradition}

Before my great grandmother {Granny} passed away, she would send us a package for EVERY holiday.  It was something that I looked forward to and loved.  It showed us that she was thinking of us and it gave us something to make every holiday special.

Inevitably in just about every package we would find some window clings.  If you aren't sure what these are, basically they are stickers that you can put on your window or mirror that can be taken off and put back on as many times as you would like.  I gave some to my daughter for Thanksgiving and they were a big hit for her on our back door, so I know she is just going to love them when she sees them.

Another way I have used these in the past is to leave my husband a little love on the mirror in our bathroom.  It is a simple and inexpensive way to show that you are thinking about your spouse.  I know it makes him smile, and that is all that matters.

I got these at Target from the dollar bins in case you are wondering.

I have to tell you that this really has been fun for me to do for my family.  It is so fun to see my 2 year old run down to her mailbox every morning to find her "presents".  Her excitement is always followed with a "Thank you mom!  It's my favorite!"  That alone makes the time I spend on this project worth it.

Day #4 {Flip}

I decided to do a treat that my husband would enjoy more than candy, and that my could still be enjoyed by my daughter as well.  These fliptz pretzels were on sale at Smith's 10 for $10.  I didn't think my daughter needed to have a whole bag to herself, so I gave one bag to my husband and then opened the other bag to split between two treat bags.

The tags are very simple to make.  I printed out the words on regular computer paper, then attached the paper to red cardstock leaving a little space on the side.  Then I cut a strip off of my Valentine paper I got from Hobby Lobby and attached it to the space.  I used a glue stick to do all of the attaching.

Last, I just used a little tape to put it on the bag and wah-lah!  A fun Valentine that I am sure anyone would love.
